At the time I bought my EOS 30D, I was not thrilled with loosing use of my wide angle Canon EF lenses due to the 1.6x APS-C sensor factor--my old 20-35mm zoom would become the equivalent of a 32-57mm zoom. I have not owned any off-brand lenses to fit EOS cameras in the past and I was very skeptical. I decided on the Tokina for two reasons--the f/4 maximum aperture was constant and it could be used on full sensor digital and 35mm film EOS bodies (although with some pretty significant limitations). Another peripheral reason was that Tokina has a pretty good reputation for their higher priced lenses. The 12-24mm has been reported as a Pentax-Tokina collaboration and has gotten some decent reviews. I decided to go for it and bought this lens with the 30D.
I have not been disappointed. The lens is impressive immediately on build quality. It's heavy and it's solid. Although plastic-barrelled, it feels like metal. The lighter Canon EF lenses actually seem flimsy alongside the Tokina. Optically, it's not bad at all. I don't test lenses by shooting test targets so I really don't know how it performs technically. Photos from real life subjects look good to me. Sharpness is pretty good wide open and gets better stopped down to f/8-f/11, where it's very sharp. Colors are vivid, there is some distortion that is not really noticeable unless you're shooting buildings or square/rectangular subjects. The autofocus is fast with a bit of noise when compared to the Canon Ultrasonic motors. The lens feels great in actual use with the push-pull manual/autofocus control being well damped and positive in use, however, the autofocus is all I really use.
I don't know if this lens is still in production or not. There is only one source for it on Amazon and it includes a filter and cleaning kit as part of the deal. I'm not familiar with the filter brand in the kit but most UV filters are okay as protectors. Personally, I would opt for a Hoya or B+W multicoated UV filter.
Overall, this is a 4 1/2 star lens in my opinion. It has a lot going for it including image quality and build quality at a relatively low price.
